The Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field

We had an awesome adventure in Green Bay last weekend- we celebrated Sarah's b-day (Mike's sister- finally 21!) ate at Brett Favre's Steakhouse, tailgated and witnessed the historical game in which the Packers defeated the Lions for their 16th straight loss!

Here we are on the way to Green Bay, celebrating Sarah's legal drinking age with a Coors Lite (of course)

This is my meal at Brett Favre's Steakhouse- yes, my sweet potato was THAT BIG (Mike's hand for reference) and yes I did get my 12 oz. prime rib smothered with a bleu cheese crown- so good!

The whole group of us outside Lambeau Field

All bundled up at the game!

Holiday Update

We had such a wonderful Christmas with our families as usual but also as usual I'm feeling the post-Christmas blues, especially because I have to work today- boo! I know! I wish we could have spent more time with the family this year but the time we did have we made special which always makes it my fave holiday. I won't be sad for too long, though, because....

We're off to Green Bay tomorrow morning to drive up for Sunday's Packers vs. Lions game! It will be my 4th Packer game, Mike's 5th and his sister & Mom & Dad's inaugural (in celebration of Mike's sister Sarah's 21st b-day-yeah!) We are so excited! I am especially stoked to wear my new awesome winter boots and gloves that Mike got me for Christmas :) made to withstand the frigidness of the FROZEN TUNDRA...

Merry Christmas!

None of this "Happy H0lidays" stuff for me- I wish YOU a MERRY CHRISTMAS and I hope this year we all celebrate with our families and loved ones the true meaning behind the celebration, the Christmas Story, and miracle of Jesus' birth.

Our plans are: off to Waterloo tomorrow for Christmas Eve with my family, then off to Dubuque for Christmas day with Mike's grandparents and extended family, then our own Christmas Friday night. Enjoy this holy holiday- I know I will!

snow day

Today I'm snowed in. Darn it! The 6 inches of snow over top of the inch or so of ice wasn't going to make for a pleasant drive to work today (especially after remembering the horrors of trying that last year) so I called the boss and now I am playing with the colors of my blog, again. I'm also planning to finally wash and put away the clothes and suitcases that are still on the bedroom floor from vacation, clean the kitchen and maybe get creative with the few ingredients that are in the fridge and pantry- it has been awhile since my last trip to the grocery store...we'll see what I come up with. I'm thinking it would be nice to fill the house with the smell of fresh baked bread- can't beat that.

90 degrees

90 degrees was the change in temperature that Mike & I got to experience in one day as we traveled home from Jamaica on Monday. It was quite the shock to go from beautiful & sunny weather in the 80's & 90's to below freezing temps as we re-entered into Iowa on a partially snow & ice covered runway...but who am I to complain? We had a wonderful and relaxing vacation we'll never forget!

Highlights:
-reading & sunning on the beach from 9 in the morning til 5 in the afternoon
-watching the full moon shine & light up the ocean
-the most delicious jerk chicken ever- we ate it for lunch every single day
-the hardworking entertainers ranging from 'Michael Jackson' to a steel drum band to a group of contortionist acrobats
-mai tai's, rum punch, dirty bananas, rum cream & Red Stripe...
-catamaran cruise to Dunn's River Falls and climbing up the waterfall all the way to the top
-spending time with the hubby and experiencing a new place together
-tan lines!

I love a party!

Friday night was my work Christmas Party held at the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort in Riverside, IA. This hotel/casino is so nice and pretty Vegas like for Iowa believe it or not. The rooms are awesome so we decided to just to stay the night after the party. I had much fun because usually I do when I get to get all dolled up :)
Mike was excited because he got to gamble so overall we had a great time- cocktails, a comedian (somehow we both ended up part of his gig because we both raised our hands when he asked if anyone had been pulled over recently and were therefore the butt of a couple of jokes but all in good clean fun of course) dinner & a little bonus gambling $ from my bosses all added to to the fun! Check out the cute dress that I borrowed from my sister-thanks Jessie!

The Holidays are Here

We enjoyed such a nice Thanksgiving holiday & weekend with each of our families and the bonus was Jonah's (our newest nephew) baptism on Saturday.
We also decided to officially kickoff for Christmas and get our tree and start decorating- my favorite! We first went to a tree farm that we've gone to before to pick and cut down our own tree but they were almost sold out and we just didn't find our perfect tree- very disappointing to say the least. So we ended up at Earl May and found a nice one anyway. As of tonight our house looks festive and the tree lights up our living room with the glow that only comes from Christmas lights (see the process in the following pictures).
Christmas is coming and I'm finally ready!

open house party

Saturday Mike & I threw an open house party to celebrate the completion of our basement-finishing project! We honored my Dad, Hank, for all of the hard work he put in while helping us to finish it off and not to mention show off the awesome hand made custom bar he built us which turned out so beautiful we can never move now!

We had about 20 family members and friends of the family come and I made chili and chicken dumpling soup, ham & cheese puff pastry roll ups, cheese ball & crackers, veggies & dip, chips & brownies. We also featured Amana beer on tap in the kegerator, hot cocoa, hot cider and wine, too. Everyone said our house felt so cozy and it made us so happy to finally share all we've put into it over the last year. Thanks everyone for coming! You are welcome anytime!

READ THESE BOOKS!

Have you read the Twilight books yet?! I just finished the series last night and I absolutely LOVED them. Not lying, these were the most intriguing books I've read since Harry Potter and those of you who know me should realize this means I'm obsessed. Please, please check these books out and read them- no matter how odd the subject seems at first (vampires, I know, but it is a total romance, too)! Then we can discuss together your new obsession! P.S. The movie comes out Friday, too. Never as good as a book, though, if you ask me.

Thank You Veterans

What more can I say but thank you from the bottom of my heart to those who have served in the military and are serving today to protect our rights and freedom as Americans. We wouldn't be where we are today without you.

Joe Pa went down!

First Joe Paterno literally went down demonstrating an onside kick at like 85 years old, injuring his knee. Secondly to add insult to injury the Hawkeyes took him and his Penn State team DOWN last Saturday with a last second field goal for the win! It was quite the upset and Mike and I were lucky enough to witness it- it was so awesome and exciting despite the freezing cold that only true fans like us brave at 9 in the morning for a 2:30 game...it is called tailgating and we still do it, yes we do. The Hawkeye fans rushed the field and we would have joined in if we weren't so high up in the stands so I captured a little video to remember the madness- check it out.

home-made pasta class

Jessie & I took another cooking class at the New Pioneer Co-op last week, this time we made fresh hand rolled pasta! It was fun as usual as we mixed, kneaded, rolled and sliced the dough into fettuccine pasta. From there we made a salmon and dill sauce, citrus butter sauce and the grand finale of a seasonal butternut and roasted garlic sauce to sample with our pasta. Tasty stuff and and always much more fun with my sister- who else would help me make fun of the overly serious lady who thought she would just answer the questions herself and the other lady who asked if there was anyway to make pasta without flour in order to be healthier....umm, seriously?!

happy birthday hubby!

Happy Birthday Mike! 29 years old today :) His gift is a gourmet meal made by me tonight and a scavenger hunt for his present, no telling yet though.

my old school election day

In 2000 I voted in my first presidential election and voted absentee ballot as I was a freshman at the time at the U of I in Iowa City and still registered in Black Hawk County. In 2004 I was an intern in Washington D.C. and voting absentee once again (talk about an exciting place to be at the time- for real). The 3rd presidential race in my voting lifetime happened today and I found myself at my local polling place voting with a paper ballot and ball point pen- old school style for the first time- complete with little cardboard privacy walls and no need for identification of any sort. Does that seem wrong to anyone else? Regardless of how we all got our vote in over the last couple of weeks and today, something big is happening in our midst and history is in the making- gotta love it!

"I just thought you needed it"

...that was what Mike said to me last night as I come in the door after work and working out to find a dozen roses to greet me, dinner in the oven and a growler of my favorite beer from Granite City poured and waiting in a frosty mug for me- complete with fresh orange slice. Seriously. Nice move hubby :)

apple orchard

These are some pics from our adventure to Wilson's Orchard a couple weekends ago. Mom, Jessie and I took Cale and Ayla apple picking to give their parents a much deserved break and some time with new baby Jonah. We sampled several different kinds of apples, picked out pumpkins, took a tractor ride to the ripe trees and picked 2 baskets full of apples. It was a blast!

camping- just us

2 weekends ago on a Friday after work Mike & I met at our favorite campground to tent camp and relax just the two of us before the weather got too cold. We scavenged for firewood (lots because Mike LOVES huge campfires), cooked hot dogs, drank tequila we bought in Mexico :) and watched the sunset over the reservoir. The next morning we read our books on the rocks, watched a professional wake boarder practice jumps on the water and packed up to go home. Even though it was just one night & day of cozy camping and relaxation it was just the break we needed. We highly recommend it. Happy Weekend everyone!

veggies and stars

This is a picture of my last harvest of tomatoes, green peppers and grape tomatoes. Not nearly as good as the August crop but overall a successfull first vegetable garden. I'm already planning for next year...

This is a picture of our front yard and our little tree that is currently changing into its fall wardrobe. See the star on the garage in the background? I bought that about a year ago and Mike hated the idea immediately so therefore it only took about a year and my winning a bet in order for that baby to make an appearance- nothing like a little sheer determination on my part!

fried green tomatoes

Love the movie, turns out I'm not a huge fan of the actual food. Here is how it went down last night:

Mike would be coming home late from work and this is usually when I experiment with new foods that I know he won't dig. I'm browsing through my trusty Better Homes & Garden Cookbook looking for recipes for the butternut squash I bought the other day when I come across a recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes. It just so happens before the first real frost a couple nights ago I picked a couple of good looking green tomatoes from my very own vines along with the rest of my herbs and grape tomatoes. It seemed like the perfect time to try this oddly intriguing recipe. I sliced them up, sprinkled with salt & pepper and let them sit. I proceeded to make homemade bread crumbs (I know!) and assemble the frying assembly line- milk, flour, eggs, breadcrumbs. Heating up the vegetable oil I start dunking, getting excited because I don't think I've ever actually fried anything ever in my own kitchen and I love fried everything- duh, who doesn't? They look delicious and golden brown and I can't wait to dig in. I dug in and....yuck. They were nasty! Must be an acquired taste or something. I will try most foods at least once and this is one of those times. I guess I'm glad I know now and won't wonder if I'm missing out.

chili & football

Yesterday I made a huge batch of chili for an impromptu Sunday Funday Chili & Football Party. It was delish and fun- perfect for a chilly early fall Sunday of lounging and football with friends - despite my Fantasy team's very poor performance.

Here is my very own chili recipe:
2 lbs ground beef- browned
Add to this and saute together with beef:
-several small or a couple larger green peppers, diced
-1 large onion or 2 small, diced
-1 clove of garlic, minced
-about 1 T. pickled jalapenos, minced
-2 envelopes chili seasoning

Add to beef and vegetables:
-2 cans spicy chili beans
-2 OR 3 cans diced tomatoes with chilies
-1 20 oz. can tomato sauce

Bring to simmer and add a couple dashes of Tabasco sauce, an additional 1 T. chili powder, and black pepper to taste.

Add sour cream, cheese and chili cheese Fritos for toppings - enjoy!

new look

When I was little I used to rearrange my room and its layout quite often. I've always liked changing up the scenery- therefore why not with my little blog, too? What do you think of the new look? Thumbs up or down? I'm still not quite sure, so we'll see how long this lasts.

Oktoberfest

Jessie & I co-hosted the first annual All-Girls Oktoberfest Party at my house last weekend- it was hit! The group was small but ready to party and we enjoyed classic German foods such as brats with sauerkraut, homemade pretzels and Amana Millstream Schild Brau Amber beer a-plenty. We played croquet, bocce ball, had paint-your-own beer stein craft time, danced and laughed like crazy. Jessie & I even wore lederhosen outfits that she hand-made for us for Halloween a couple of years ago!

here he is!
